If you’re still deciding whether or not to hire movers, it’s best to weigh your options. The only way to do that is to know the cost of choosing to move by yourself. If your decision to move by yourself is budget-based, remember that moving all on your own isn’t free either. Several factors should be examined to answer this question – the distance of the move, how many belongings you have to move, and what all will be needed to complete the evolution. There are a number of hidden costs to moving that you may not think about at first. So we created a list of some items you will want to price out and consider before you commit.
Meals On The Day – all of your food and cooking supplies, in addition to china and cutlery should be packed at this point. Usually, it’s easier to just grab some food out and on the go. Estimated cost for a family of four, 3 meals per day: $150.
Moving Truck Rental -The costs vary by the size of the moving van or truck that you need. You should also consider the cost of gas and insurance for the vehicle. Some companies will charge you by the mile. Estimated cost for a four-bedroom home: $100
Fuel for Truck – Obviously you will need fuel for the trip, and depending on how much you have, may even have to make more than one trip. Rules can vary by the rental company, but most will also require that you return the truck with a (nearly) full tank. The estimated cost of fuel expenses going across town and returning the truck: $60
Moving Supplies– There are a few moving equipment items that not everyone has on hand, but they’re extremely useful on moving day. Moving blankets, plastic wrap, and dollies are all items that we highly recommend you obtain. Typically you can rent or purchase these supplies from your truck rental company. Not to mention boxes, tape, and packing paper or bubble wrap to protect belongings in the boxes. The estimated total cost of moving supplies: $100
Convincing your friends to help – You’re likely going to need help carrying bulky furniture and items. We don’t recommend asking your friends, especially if everyone is in their 30’s or older. But if you must, we suggest you at least compensate them with food and beverages. Water is a must! The estimated cost of hiring friends to help move: $100 – $300
Damages – when you don’t hire professionals, you run the risk of inexperienced people bumping walls or furniture, leaving behind marks or damages you may have to cover. Not to mention your belongings getting damaged and broken can be costly to replace. Estimated cost of damages can vary from $50-500 or much more.
Opportunity, time cost – Let’s face it. The longer you spend moving, the less time you have to unpack and get settled. Moving is already one of the most stressful things you can experience, so it’s best to rip the bandage off and get it over as quickly as possible.
Stress, energy cost – We can’t neglect to mention the mental and physical effects of moving. You’ll need to prepare for the physically and logistically demanding aspects of your moving day, which may take time itself before the move. Considering many people consider moving as stressful as a divorce, you owe yourself a plan that makes moving into your new home as enjoyable as possible.
We can’t put a cost on the last two items because your time and health are priceless. With the previously stated things in mind, you’re looking at a low-end estimated total cost of $500 – $850+ to move a 4 person family by yourself across town.
